Watch this past Sunday's Catalyst teaching:
What's Wrong with the World?

When the Downtown congregation was launched almost six years ago, we saw God do a new thing. We were still a Redeemer congregation with its values and foundational commitments, but we were able to become a new kind of Redeemer that was fully Redeemer and fully Downtown. It took the same animating values of our past and planted them in new and different soil, which brought forth a tree with fruit that has the flavor of downtown. This ministry year, we hope to do it again. We’ll continue to emphasize formation, community, witness, vocation and worship, but we hope to re-animate everyone with a sense of hopeful expectation about God’s new work.

We are praying that our entire church would experience a revival personally and corporately as we come together to ask the Holy Spirit to reenergize us through this season.

To do this, we are launching Catalyst, an eight-week series during our 5 p.m. worship service starting Sunday, September 30, leading up to the launch of our Downtown LAB congregation on November 28. Our 5 p.m. service will still be a worship service but will have a different teaching than our 9:30 a.m. service. Catalyst is for everyone. Whether you’ve been a Redeemer congregant for years or have just started attending, Catalyst is a way to come together as a community and go deeper in our understanding of our vision for gospel renewal and to discover how God is calling each of us into his story for Downtown. Don’t worry, if you can’t make it, they will be taped and available online afterwards. We are praying that our entire church would experience a revival personally and corporately as we come together to ask the Holy Spirit to reenergize us through this season.

Catalyst FAQs

What is Catalyst?
Catalyst is an eight-week “missional-equipping” series for Downtown. The original series was created six years ago, when Redeemer Downtown was starting, to help unify and clarify who God was calling us to be as a new congregation in downtown Manhattan. Together, as a community, we'll “go on mission” and consider the foundational principles for our Redeemer vision — such as city, justice, community, joy and vocation — to embed them more into our lives.

Why are we doing Catalyst? Why now?
As we prepare for a new Downtown congregation through LAB, Catalyst will lead up to its launch on November 28. At the end of Catalyst, we will ask God to launch all of us — whether you're a part of the regular services and/or LAB — into mission together.

When does Catalyst start and end?
Catalyst starts on Sunday, September 30 and ends Sunday, November 18. The Catalyst series will always be the focus of our 5 p.m. worship service.

What is the main difference between AM and PM services?
The 9:30 a.m. service will have traditional sermons, but the 5 p.m. service will have: “Catalyst Talks” focused on themes, response time during the service, Communion every week, and post-service discussions (with snacks!) that are led by Downtown staff. Also! In the weekly Connect insert of your service bulletin, look for the Catalyst section with the main topic, response questions, and a blank space for notes.

Should I go to both services?
Yes! Catalyst is for everyone — not just for the 5 p.m. service attendees or those interested in LAB. Even if you're a regular at the 9:30 a.m. service, we welcome you back in the evening. Or, attend just the evening service during the eight weeks. Don’t worry if you can’t attend both services — all “Catalyst Talks” will be recorded and videos made available online.

How can Community Groups get involved in Catalyst?
If you’re involved in a CG, whether as a leader or a participant, we hope Catalyst will inspire ongoing conversations. If you have questions or need ideas about how to have conversations, email David Lee.
