Pastoral Search Update 4 (November 2021)

Grace and peace to you Redeemer Downtown!

It has been five months since our last congregational update and we have been hard at work meeting and interviewing candidates during this time. Under the guidance of our coach, Ed Norton of McGowan Global we have had reached out and vetted over 30 candidates and completed deep dive sermon reviews and first interviews of over a dozen of those candidates. As previously mentioned a deep dive is done by a small group of PSC members and includes intense reviews of sermons, resumes, social media and a standard ministerial data form for each applicant. After each deep dive we meet as a full committee to discuss the candidates and recommend whether to proceed to a second more in depth interview. In the past few months a typical week includes listening and evaluating three to four sermons, zoom meetings with our small deep dive teams, side meetings of the executive committee and a full committee meeting every Wednesday to either interview candidates or discuss results. We are deep into the process of second interviews and preparing for third interviews with an even smaller pool of candidates.

We have been humbled and encouraged during this process. Encouraged to meet and interact with amazing, committed men with sacrificial hearts for God and who are boldly preaching and living out the gospel of Christ. Humbled and reminded constantly that God already knows who He has in mind for our Senior Pastor at Redeemer Downtown and we can only be faithful to heed the Spirit and ask for discernment through prayer and through listening to each other. We are a diverse group of individuals, committed and at peace with the process, even when we disagree on certain matters or candidates! It has been a blessing to get to know and trust each other over this past year and we thank you again for entrusting us with this task of searching for our new pastor.

We continue to ask for your prayers for the PSC team and for our next Senior Pastor. Will you join us in praying that this man and his family will know and discern the specific call to lead Redeemer Downtown, and that he will have a strong and clear vision for New York City? Will you pray for our team that we would not become weary and that we would remain energized and continue to persevere through the process? Please pray for our continued protection from spiritual attack and for unity and peace among ourselves. Please pray for our staff and pastoral team as they continue to minister faithfully to our congregation, that God would strengthen and energize them also. We are so grateful for each one of them.

Please join our prayer team every Wednesday at 7pm via zoom using the link provided on our Downtown homepage, and the Sunday morning at 9:15 or evening service at 4:00 pm pre-service prayer teams to lift up this process in prayer.

We look forward to giving you another update after the New Year.

Yours in Christ,
The Pulpit Search Committee

Pastoral Search Update 3 (June 2021)

Grace and peace to you Redeemer Downtown!

The flow of candidates since May has been steady but not overwhelming. We have been encouraged by the quality of the candidates coming in and we continue to be grateful for our consultants McGowan as we fine tune our process and requirements.

We are actively in deep dive mode where we review candidates in 2 week intervals. We review sermons, resumes, social media and a standard ministerial data application that allows us to see an overview of their experience and ministry priorities.

After a "first look" brief interview with each prospective candidate, we gather a smaller pool of applicants from this first round and move forward with more in-depth interviews. We hope to be into interviews later in July and will be back with updates on our progress to the congregation in August.

All that to say, we are busy and share an excitement about this new phase of the process and we humbly ask for you all to join us in prayer. As always, we invite you to join us for prayer on Wednesdays at 7 pm via zoom.

Please continue to pray for qualified, experienced candidates and their families. The nominate button is still open on the website and your suggestions for candidates are all also welcomed. Pray the Lord will guide us in His wisdom.

Please pray that all our interactions with candidates will be fruitful and life giving to all parties. Rev Ed (from McGowan) reminded us recently that even as we meet with a candidate who doesn't go forward with the process for whatever reason, it is an opportunity to encourage that pastor and help him articulate his calling.

Pray for continued health and unity on the PSC team. We also ask for special prayers for Emily Lin, one of our co-chairs, who suffered a mild stroke in April. We are reminded that we are prime targets for spiritual attack, but Emily is well on the mend and an encouragement to the team. She remains as joyful as ever and involved as she can.

Lastly, when we had dinner with our consultant a few weeks ago, he noticed that we all have a genuine enjoyment of being together and a commitment to this church. So please pray the Lord sustains that so we may continue in His work for the joy, love and glory of our beloved church and His kingdom.

Yours in Christ,
The Pulpit Search Committee

Pastoral Search Update 2 (April 2021)

Grace and peace to you Redeemer Downtown!

The past two months have been full of activity for the Pulpit Search Committee as we engaged in outreach to our Redeemer Downtown Congregation. Thank you to all who participated in the Congregational Survey, Town Hall and Discovery Weekend focus group—your input across these different platforms allowed us access to multiple voices and broadened our understanding of the congregation.

A major take away from our outreach was realizing that we have a strong core of church members and regular attenders who are committed to seeing our Downtown Congregation flourish. You are invested in our growth and ready to work together to build our community and collectively strengthen our faith—this is deeply encouraging. Another repeated theme in discussions was the Congregation’s desire for more in depth discipleship and biblical teaching, a desire for more prayer and evangelism, and a hope for increased outreach to our local communities. Overall the congregation indicated a strong sense of the church’s identity and mission and sees our church as a place for spiritual growth for believers as well as non-believers. We did also note strong and at times conflicting perspectives within the congregation on various issues including the involvement of lay people in ministry and how to discuss issues of social justice, to name a few. Please look out for the survey results summary and church profile to be posted to the website in the next couple weeks for more in depth commentary!

This Month’s Work:

This month we are spending time with our Downtown Staff, especially to listen to and incorporate their insights into the upcoming interview process of potential candidates. Our Church Profile Committee is hard at work writing the Church and Pastor Profiles which will be used by McGowan and Associates to present our congregation to potential candidates. The final draft should be completed by early May and will be made available to the Congregation via the website. Our Candidate Management committee is likewise busy setting up systems to manage applications and fine tuning our internal review process.

As a collective, the PSC members are studying the book “Preaching” by Tim Keller, and together learning how to better evaluate sermons. By mid-May, we expect to be reviewing the first batch of potential candidates that have been vetted by McGowan, and the committee will break out into four teams to do “deep dives” into candidate backgrounds, listen to sermons and review applications. This cycle will repeat itself, followed by interviews at varying stages in the process, until we are able to agree on a single candidate to be presented to the Congregation for consideration.

Prayer for the Pastoral Search:

As we close out this season of outward focus to the congregation, we ask for your prayers for wisdom and focus as we turn inward to the work at hand, and start to review potential candidates. Will you pray that we will be energized, motivated, and thorough in our approach? Please continue to check in on the website for updates to the weekly prayer guide, and if you are free, please join us on Wednesdays on zoom to pray for the search process.

Candidate Submissions:

The nominate button is live on the website! We invite you to submit candidate nominations for individuals you would like us to consider for review. All nominations are confidential and submissions will go to the PSC and McGowan & Associates. Your submissions will be added to a larger pool of candidates being gathered by McGowan from the PCA nationwide and beyond.

We are so encouraged by your input over the past few weeks and we thank you again for creating the time in your schedules to engage with us in this process.

Yours in Christ,

The Pulpit Search Committee

Pastoral Search Update 1 (February 2021)

Grace and peace to you Redeemer Downtown!

We are thrilled to be serving our church as the Pulpit Search Committee (PSC), and we have been encouraged over the last few weeks by your interest, questions and prayers for us and this search process. We are committed to keeping our congregation informed on our work, and we will be providing a monthly update both during Sunday morning announcements and here on this website. It is our desire to be open and transparent about our progress and we welcome your feedback and value your input.

This Month’s Work:

This month we vetted and selected a consultant, McGowan and Associates, to assist in the search process. The decision to hire a search consultant produced intense and fruitful debate at our committee and subcommittee meetings. McGowan and Associates brings years of experience to the pastor search process, including a wealth of best practices and training material for us the PSC, coaching for our PSC officers and all our subcommittee work, and most importantly, a deep reach into the PCA pastor community for potential candidates. As our Chair, Reggie Kyle, often says, “we want to leave no stone left unturned in this search process.” As we start to work with McGowan we can already see how their process integrates into the outreach work of our subcommittees such as the survey and town hall committees, while validating and enhancing the internal work of other committees such as candidate management and personnel onboarding. We look forward to this ongoing collaboration.

We are excited to launch the website and the congregational survey this month and we look forward to engaging with the congregation through your responses. The survey will be open from Tuesday Feb 23 through Monday March 8—please find twenty minutes to prayerfully read and respond to the questions. In early March we will be hosting a town hall to review and discuss the results of the survey and to hear more from the congregation about your hopes for our church and for our new senior pastor. In mid-March McGowan and Associates will be holding a focus group “Discovery Weekend” to dig even deeper into a cross section of the congregation and in so doing get to know us better and assess the spiritual health of our church. The cumulative results of these three outreach activities will be used to create a Pastor and Church profile that will be used as search criteria for the new pastor. We hope to engage as many and as broad a spectrum of our congregation as possible—please participate however you are able!

Prayer for the Pastoral Search:

Please join us in prayer throughout this pastoral search process. This month, have a look at the prayer guide tab for a broad overview of prayer points, and please stay tuned for the weekly prayer guide launching in March 2021.

Candidate Submissions:

There will be future opportunities to submit a pastoral candidate for consideration by the committee: please check back in for an update on that process.

See you at the Town Hall!

Yours in Christ,

The Pulpit Search Committee
